Carmina & Rhapsody - Classical - 17 Sep
This is the final year that Adrian King will be the conductor and music director for the SCSO, the Noosa Chorale and the Sunshine Coast Choral Society.

The esteemed conductor has held all three roles for fifteen years, and is retiring at the end of 2022. King is bringing all three groups together for the first time ever, for two spectacular performances of Carl Orff’s much-loved masterpiece for orchestra and choirs: Carmina Burana

Taken from poems written in the 11th to 13th century, Carmina Burana tells stories of life in a Bavarian village in the Middle Ages.

Powerful and uplifting, it starts with the iconic movement O Fortuna, with both choirs and orchestra at full fortissimo. Soprano Judit Molnar, tenor Ron Morris and baritone Daniel Smerdon then lead the choirs and orchestra through the tales of love and loss.

But first, the concert programme starts with George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, written during his time in the City of Light. The famous musical tutor, Nadia Boulanger, along with several other prospective Parisian tutors such as Maurice Ravel, rejected his applications to be their student, afraid that rigorous classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style.

Following is Gershwin’s masterpiece – the jazz-infused piano concerto Rhapsody in Blue, featuring soloist Theo Pike.

After an interval, we are transported from Gershwin’s 1930’s jazz club to Carl Orff’s village in the Bavarian alps in the Middle Ages.

10th of September, 2:00pm, Venue 114, 114 Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina.

17th of September, 2:00pm, St. Andrew's Anglican College, 40 Peregian Springs Drive, Peregian Springs.
