From Milan to Maleny: grand opera comes to the Hinterland
The soaring voices, passion and drama of Italy’s great opera houses are coming to Maleny this October, as Sunshine Coast classical ensemble Trio Sóle brings some of opera’s greatest moments to the Hinterland. Soprano Vanessa West, Neapolitan tenor Raffaele Pierno and pianist Janet Brewer will present From La Scala to the Sunshine Coast at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, October 25.
The concert is a “best of” celebration of grand opera, featuring much-loved music from La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Carmen and La Traviata, with soaring arias, passionate duets and semi-staged scenes bringing the characters and stories to life.
West said the trio wanted to capture the emotion and sense of occasion of a night at the opera, but bring it much closer to home.
“There is something extraordinary about experiencing these voices and stories live - but you shouldn’t have to travel to Brisbane, Sydney or Milan to experience it,” West said.
“We want audiences to feel the romance, drama and spectacle of grand opera, but up close, in an intimate setting where you’re only metres away from the performers.”
Maleny audiences may already be familiar with West through her performances with Maleny Singers in Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. She will return to perform with the company in its production of La Bohème in 2027. Adding another local connection, Maleny’s Margaret Taylor OAM will host and narrate the concert, guiding audiences through the music, characters and stories - making the world of opera easy to follow for newcomers and devotees alike.
And to heighten the sense of occasion, the venue will be styled by Sunshine Coast newcomer The Joy Social Co, helping transform the community hall into an intimate European-inspired setting where the experience begins from the moment audiences arrive.
Trio Sole is one of the Sunshine Coast’s newest classical ensembles, bringing together three experienced local musicians to make exceptional classical music immediate, emotional and accessible. For one afternoon, they’re bringing a little of La Scala to Maleny.
